British West Indies



British West Indies, collective name for islands in the Caribbean Sea that are or have been dependencies of Great Britain, including Anguilla, the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Grenada, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and the British Virgin Islands. Although the British West Indies is not a political entity, the islands have formed such organizations as the West Indies Federation (1958–62) and Caricom, or the Caribbean Community, an alliance based on foreign policy and economic cooperation (1973).
