Sir Marc Isambard Brunel
Brunel, Sir Marc Isambard (1769–1849), French-born British engineer and inventor who built the world's first underwater tunnel (Thames Tunnel, 1825). His son, Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806–59), a civil engineer, designed the Clifton suspension bridge at Bristol, England, and built iron-hulled steamships, including the giant Great Eastern (1858).
