Brussels



Brussels (pop. c. 134,800), Belgian capital city, headquarters of the European Common Market and NATO. First commercially important in the 12th century, it was granted a ducal charter in 1312. From the 16th to the 19th centuries it was subject successively to Spain, Austria, and France. It manufactures textiles, lace, and furniture and is a transport center.
