Martin Buber



Buber, Martin (1878–1965), Jewish philosopher, born in Austria. Editor of a major German-Jewish journal, Der Jude, 1916–24, he was a leading educator and scholar of Hasidism. He was forced to leave Germany in 1938 and moved to Jerusalem. His central philosophical concept, the direct relationship between God and the individual, is expressed in I and Thou (1923).
