John Bunyan
Bunyan, John (1628–88), English author. A tinker by trade, he became a Baptist preacher in 1657. While imprisoned for unlicensed preaching (1660–72; 1675) he wrote his most famous work, The Pilgrim's Progress (1678), an allegory in simple prose describing Christian's journey to the Celestial City.
