(Leonard) James Callaghan
Callaghan, (Leonard) James (1912– ), prime minister of the United Kingdom 1976–79. He was elected Labour party leader on the resignation of Harold Wilson and became prime minister immediately. Labour lost the 1979 general election to Margaret Thatcher's Conservatives.
