Canticle

Canticle, piece of religious music, similar in character to a psalm, but using a passage from the Bible other than the psalms themselves. Some canticles actually date from biblical times and are therefore very ancient. More recently the word has come to be used for shorter choral works with any kind of religious or semi-religious basis.
