Caracara

Caracara, any of a variety of long-legged South American hawks with long narrow wings, related to the falcon. The patch of bare skin at the base of the bill, a characteristic shared with vultures, is an adaptation for carrion-eating, but caracaras also hunt for live prey and will eat fruit. They rob other birds of their food, and the red-throated caracara raids wasps' nests. The Guadeloupe caracara was exterminated before 1911.
