Carcassonne

Carcassonne (pop. 41,200), city in southern France, southeast of Toulouse. Carcassonne is divided by the Aude River into the old town (Cité) and the newer Ville Basse. The old town is a medieval walled city whose architecture has made Carcassonne a tourist attraction.
