Caricature

Caricature, sketch exaggerating or distorting characteristics of its subject for satirical purposes. It became an established form by the 18th century, in the hands of Francisco de Goya in Spain and William Hogarth in England, followed by Thomas Rowlandson, the Cruikshanks, and John Tenniel, and the savagely witty Honoré Daumier in France. Today, artists such as David Levine and Albert Hirschfeld continue the tradition in the United States.
