Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Carlsbad Caverns National Park, national park in southeastern New Mexico. Its major site is a series of limestone caves about 60 million years old, among the largest caverns in the world. The caverns have spectacular stalagmite formations. The Big Room is a single chamber 1,800 ft (550 m) long, 1,100 ft (335 m) wide, and 225 ft (78 m) at its highest point. Several million bats still inhabit the caverns, which were designated a national park in 1930.
