Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea, or Carmel (pop. 4,239), town in California situated on Carmel Bay south of Monterey. Long an art and literature center that has attempted to maintain its quiet charm free from modern encroachments, Carmel is especially well known as the home of such artists as Henry Miller, James D. Nash, and Joan Baez.
