John Carroll



Carroll, John (1735–1815), first U.S. Roman Catholic bishop, elected by U.S. priests in 1789 and consecrated Bishop of Baltimore in 1790. A friend of Benjamin Franklin and supporter of the American revolution, Bishop Carroll founded Georgetown University and fought against anti-Catholic prejudice in the early United States. He became an archbishop in 1808.
