Lauro Fred Cavazos

Cavazos, Lauro Fred (1927– ), named secretary of education in 1988, first Mexican American to hold a cabinet post. He was president of Texas Tech University from 1980 to 1988, when he was named secretary of education by President Ronald Reagan; he remained in the post under President George Bush.
