Nicolae Ceausescu

Ceausescu, Nicolae (1918–89), president of Romania from 1967 until 1989, when he was overthrown and executed. First elected member of the Romanian Communist Party Central Committee in 1948, he became head of the committee in 1965. As president, he instigated a policy of independence within the Soviet bloc.
