Paul Cézanne

Cézanne, Paul (1839–1906), French painter. His early work is impressionist in style, but he later abandoned that mode to develop an approach of his own, lyrical and vibrantly colorful, as in the Grandes Baigneuses (1905). Cézanne sought to suggest depth through the use of color and to give his paintings structural strength and formal integrity. He became a prime innovator of modern art, anticipating Cubism and other movements.
