Charlie Chaplin



Chaplin, Charlie (Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin; 1889–1977), English film actor and director, great comedian of the silent cinema. A vaudeville player, he rose to fame in Hollywood, 1913–19 in a series of short comedies, in which he established his Little Tramp character. After 1918 he produced his own feature-length films, including The Gold Rush (1925) and, with sound, Modern Times (1936) and the Great Dictator (1940).
