Chardin, Jean-Baptiste-Simeon (1699–1779), French painter. He is best known for his still-lifes and for his middle-period genre paintings, affectionate depictions of the everyday life of the bourgeoisie (The Kiss, The Grace). His work is characterized by a straightforward realism, with atmospheric use of light and color.
