Charleston
Charleston (pop. 506,875), capital of South Carolina and major regional port. The oldest and largest city in the state, Charleston is a tourist center famous for its 18th-century buildings and monuments. It is also a producer of chemicals and steel. In 1861 it was the scene of the first military incident of the Civil War, the firing on Fort Sumter.
