Chattanooga



Chattanooga (pop. 162,000), city in southern Tennessee, on the Tennessee River near the Georgia border. Chattanooga's strategic position as a railroad junction made it an important Northern stronghold in the Civil War. It later grew into a major transportation and industrial center for textiles and metals.
