Chautauqua Movement



Chautauqua Movement, U.S. adult education movement that began at Lake Chautauqua, N.Y., in 1874, as a course for Sunday school teachers. The founders, John H. Vincent, a Methodist minister, and Lewis Miller, a businessperson, organized lectures, concerts, and recreation activities attended by thousands each year until c.1924.
