Chicken



Chicken, domesticated bird raised for its meat and eggs, originating in northern Asia from the jungle fowl. The Leghorn, leading egg breed in the U.S., lays over 300 eggs a year. Chickens raised for meat are marketed as broilers and fryers when under three months old (weighing 2–4 lb/1–2 kg) and as roasters when 4–8 months old (weighing up to about 7 lb/3 kg).
