Christian IX

Christian IX (1818–1906), king of Denmark 1863–1906. During his reign, Denmark acquired the territory of Schleswig in 1863, but in 1864 Prussia and Austria invaded, gaining control of Schleswig and Holstein. Although against democracy, in 1901 he recognized a democratic parliament.
