Cochise

Cochise (1815–74), chief of the Chiricahua Apache tribe. Aroused by the unjust execution of relatives by soldiers, he began a violent campaign against European Americans in Arizona in 1861 and effectively drove them from the area. In 1862 he was driven back by troops to the Dragon Mountains, which he held until his capture by Gen. George Crook in 1871. He escaped but gave himself up when the Chiricahua Reservation was formed in 1872. After his death, his people were removed from the reservation.
