Coffee house



Coffee house, variety of commercial establishment that arose in London in the mid-17th century. Coffee houses became centers of business, cultural, political, and religious information exchange. The first English newspapers arose as broadsheets distributed in coffee houses. The institution died away in London in the 19th century, but cafes remain widespread in most European, Mediterranean, and Latin American countries.
