Colitis

Colitis, disease characterized by inflammation of the colon (large intestine). Symptoms include abdominal pain, cramps, and diarrhea. If ulcers develop in the walls of the intestine, the condition can become chronic, with fever and complications. Colitis sometimes follows attacks of dysentery, but causative microorganisms have not been traced. There is probably a psychosomatic component, anxiety bringing on attacks of the disease. In severe cases a section of the colon may have to be removed by surgery.
