Compact disc (CD)
Compact disc (CD), small plastic disc used for storage of recorded sound or other data. The disc has a transparent coating that protects the stored information and allows it to be read by a laser beam. In the music recording industry the compact disc has virtually replaced the long-playing record. There are various variants for different purposes, such as CD-i CD-e, CD-WORM, and CD-s.
