Compass

Compass, instrument used to indicate direction. Navigators on ships and aircraft use a compass to determine the direction in which they are heading. There are 2 main kinds of compasses: magnetic compasses and gyrocompasses. Magnetic compasses point to the magnetic north pole; adjustments must be made to determine the true north.
