Compromise of (1850)



Compromise of 1850, attempt by the U.S. Congress to resolve North-South conflicts over whether slavery would be extended to new territories, in particular Texas and other lands taken from Mexico in the 1846–48 wars. The compromise included a package of measures sponsored by Stephen Douglas and Henry Clay. They failed to resolve the dispute.
