Connaught and Duke of Strathearn



Connaught and Strathearn, Duke of (Arthur William Patrick Albert; 1850–1942), governor general of Canada (1911–16), son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Great Britain. In 1874 he was made Duke of Connaught and Strathearn. He served as commander in chief of the British forces of the Mediterranean, 1907–09. As governor general of Canada he helped to inspire patriotism during the early years of World War I, and he reestablished the Canadian Patriotic Fund to help dependents of people serving in the Canadian armed forces.
