Constitutional Union Party
Constitutional Union Party, U.S. political party formed from remnants of the Whig and American parties, active 1859–60. Its platform upheld the Constitution and the Union, while ignoring the slavery issue. As a result, the vote in 1860 was split and Lincoln was elected by the electoral college, the first President without a popular majority.
