USS Constitution

Constitution, USS, American frigate carrying 44 guns, known as “Old Ironsides.” Launched in Boston in 1797, it served in the war with Tripoli and the War of 1812. In 1828 a plan to dismantle the warship provoked Oliver Wendell Holmes's poem “Old Ironsides.” The Constitution was rebuilt, berthed in Boston, and opened to the public in 1934.
