James Fenimore Cooper
Cooper, James Fenimore (1789–1851), one of the first important U.S. novelists, who created a number of colorful and enduring characters of the early American frontier. His famous series of Leatherstocking Tales, which include The Pioneers (1823), The Last of the Mohicans (1826), The Prairie (1827), The Pathfinder (1840), and The Deerslayer (1841), centered around the adventures of an intrepid woodsman called Natty Bumppo. Cooper achieved popularity in Europe, where he wrote for several years. Cooper also wrote several works of social criticism.
