Córdoba
Córdoba (pop. 304,800), or Córdova, ancient Moorish city in Andalusia, southern Spain. The capital of Cordoba province, it is located 86 mi (146 km) northeast of Seville. Córdoba was a famous center of Moorish art and culture that reached its peak in the 10th century A.D. A great mosque was built as a Muslim house of worship in the 700s. Made into a Roman Catholic cathedral in 1238, Córdoba's chief landmark is supported by over 1,000 pillars of granite, onyx, marble, and jasper. Today, Córdoba's industries include brewing and metallurgy.
