Ezra Cornell



Cornell, Ezra (1807–74), U.S. businessman, pioneer in telegraphy. With Samuel Morse he created the United States' first telegraph line (1844), which went from Baltimore to Washington. He was also founder and director of the Western Union Telegraph Company (1855). His gifts helped create Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. (1865).
