Prudence Crandall
Crandall, Prudence (1803–90), U.S. educator. She opened a school for African-American girls in Canterbury, Conn., despite community opposition and state laws prohibiting it (1833). She was arrested, tried, and found guilty, but her conviction was overturned in 1834. Later that year an angry mob attacked the school, forcing her to close it.
