Car Cost Insurance Low

How to Keep Car Insurance Cost Low

Just about everyone who drives a car has to purchase insurance, and just about every one of them thinks that they pay too much. Although there is a great deal that one can do to pay less for any insurance, switching to a low cost car insurance carrier can also yield a great deal of savings.

Before looking into a new insurance carrier, there are some basic steps that any owner can take to reduce their insurance cost. The first is to increase deductibles. The higher one’s deductible, the less likely one is to make an insurance claim. Because of this, significant savings are possible. Some carriers will reduce a collision premium by $250 if the insured simply increases their deductible from $250 to $500. Deleting unnecessary coverage, such as towing coverage when one owns a new car with roadside assistance, can also be a way to save some money.

Ultimately, though, the best way to save money on an existing policy is to be less of a risk for an insurance company. Becoming a better driver by taking defensive driving courses may yield a discount for some older drivers. Getting fewer tickets by slowing down and stopping at stop signs will also significantly lower one’s premium. Trading in a sporty car for a minivan, or a regularly-stolen Honda Civic on a rarely stolen Ford Focus, can also help reduce risk levels. One should also look at their policy’s mileage allowance. If one does relatively little driving, or takes public transit to commute to work, a discount is frequently available.

Once one has completed tidying up one’s existing insurance coverage, one can then look at switching companies. There are a number of reduced cost car insurers such as 21th Century Insurance (formerly known as 20th Century Insurance), Geico, and Progressive. All three of them have websites which make it very easy to get a detailed rate quote for comparison against one’s current insurer. Bear in mind, though, that some of these low cost auto insurance companies will not offer other types of insurance such as life or property. If losing a multi-policy discount is a factor, it may make sense not to switch companies.

If one decides to change insurance carriers, the new carrier will make it easy to obtain a new policy with them. Before signing on with the new policy, though, ensure that one can freely leave one’s existing carrier. Although many pay insurance on a monthly basis, policies are usually written for 6 or 12 month periods, and some carriers will not allow a cancellation mid-stream. In this case, one should time their new policy’s starting time to coincide with the expiration of the old policy with as little overlap as possible.

There are many ways to achieve a low cost for one’s automobile insurance. The process, though, should start with fixing one’s existing coverage before changing companies. Only by doing both can one get the best possible deal.
