What is Included in Contents Home Insurance UK?

Everyone realizes the importance of having their home insured, but some homeowners and renters are not aware that the content of the home may not be covered under regular home insurance policies. Different countries have different insurance programs, of course. In the UK, the home owner should ask about Contents Home Insurance.

Contents Home Insurance is an additional insurance policy that covers your personal items in that residence. It can also be written up to include coverage for portable items such as jewellery, pedal cycles, camcorders, DVD players, and other valuables likely to be stolen and carried away.

There are two ways to calculate your contents insurance premiums;
1. Bedroom Rated – Bedroom Rated coverage is a rather generic coverage based solely on the number of bedrooms there are in the residence. It is best used by those persons who find their total sum insured is on the low side.
2. Sum Insured – Sum Insured is based on the costs to replace your items with new ones, with no deduction for wear and tear or depreciation. Some items, like clothing, are not insured for new replacement costs. If you choose the “sum insured” option, be sure your sum equals the total amount the new replacements would cost.

When you apply for insurance, list details about home security measures, such as types of locks you have on the home doors and/or windows. If your home is not secured, your Theft Insurance claim may be rejected.

If your valuables include many items that are susceptible to breakage, list them and ask for a bigger accidental damage limit. All Risk Insurance is available to cover small valuables like jewellery and watches. Insurance does not cover items that are just worn out due to age.

To speed up claims, remember to retain detailed purchase receipts when you make purchases of valuables. If you do not have enough insurance coverage on your total sum insured, your insurance company will make an adjustment that provides only average coverage payment of claims. This could be quite a bit less than you should have been able to get with an accurate estimate of value and insurance coverage for those higher amounts.

Items to consider:
1. Does coverage replacement mean new costs or adjusted?
2. Are outbuildings and landscaped areas like gardens contents covered?
3. What is covered under accidents compared to losses?
4. Is cash you store in the home covered?
5. If you cannot remain in the home, are your expenses for temporary accommodations covered?

The UK is just as susceptible to damage incidents as anywhere else in the world. Burglary, theft, natural disasters, storms and wind/rain damage do occur. If you skip obtaining proper amount of contents insurance, those items could be gone with the wind. Stormy weather problems can cause related damage from water leakage or flooding. Have all home insurance policies with one service provider/insurer to avoid arguments over who should cover what when that disaster does happen. It is essential to read and understand exactly what the insurance coverage that you are purchasing does cover.
