Buchan, Elizabeth

(British, 1948– )

Elizabeth Buchan was born in Guildford, Surrey, and educated at the University of Kent. She worked in publishing before starting to write her own fiction. Her first novels were historical, Consider the Lily (1993) being set between the two world wars. This novel, the winner of the Romantic Novel of the Year award, draws on the symbolism of the English garden and weaves a haunting tale of two cousins, rivals for the same man. Perfect Love (1995) is a contemporary novel, in which the central character, Prue, is researching the story of Joan of Arc. The happily married Prue begins an adulterous affair with her son-in-law. Against her Nature (1997) contrasts the world of London high finance with rural, village life. Elizabeth Buchan writes intelligent, atmospheric, psychologically astute romance.
