McCaffrey, Anne

(US, 1926– )

Anne McCaffrey was the first woman winner of the Hugo award for science fiction for Weyr Search (1967), the first volume in the highly successful and ongoing Dragonriders of Pern series of novels. McCaffrey has reacted against the stereotypical depictions of women in science fiction writing, creating active and volatile heroines. With Ursula Le Guin she is one of the most established and respected women writing in science fiction today. Start with Dragonrider (1968).
