American science fictionwriter, born in San Diego, California, educated at San Diego State University. His first works were space operas such as Hegira (1979) and Strength of Stones (1981). His more substantial later works include Blood Music (1985), which deals with the consequences of biological experiment; Eon (1985) and its sequels Eternity (1988) and Legacy (1995), which describe the aftermath of nuclear war; The Forge of God (1987), which again deals with catastrophe; and Queen of Angels (1990), which predicts a high-tech, ecologically sound twenty-first century, and was followed by a sequel, Moving Mars (1993).
