Jeffrey Farnol Biography
(1878–1952), The Broad Highway, The Amateur Gentleman, Beltane the Smith, The Chronicles of the Imp
British novelist, born in Warwickshire. He went to the USA in 1902 where he wrote his first novel, The Broad Highway (1910), a picaresque adventure set in Georgian England. He returned to England where The Amateur Gentleman (1913), set in the Regency period, established his career as a best-selling author of more than forty titles, including Beltane the Smith (1913), The Chronicles of the Imp (1915), Our Admirable Betty (1918), The Geste of Duke Jocelyn (1920), Black Bartelmy's Treasure (1920), The Quest of Youth (1927), Over the Hills (1930), and The Jade of Destiny (1948). He had a great gift for story-telling, particularly in describing scenes of low life, but for modern tastes his women characters tend to be rather stereotyped figures of sweetness and virtue.
