(1888–1937), pseudonym of Herman Cyril Mcneile
British popular writer, a regular army officer who served in the Royal Engineers and retired as a lieutenant-colonel in 1919; he is best known for his stories about Captain Hugh Drummond, in most of which the villains are Carl Peterson and his daughter Irma. Bull-Dog Drummond: The Adventures of a Demobilized Officer Who Found Peace Dull (1920) was followed by The Black Gang (1922), The Third Round (1924; US title Bulldog Drummond's Third Round), and others; after McNeile's death the series was continued by Gerard Fairlie (1899–1983), the original model for the character.
